Olympic Athletes and Their Focus of Attention

Olympic athletes know that focus is everything when competing at the highest levels. Research from UNLV’s Professor Gabriele Wulf reveals that attention plays a critical role in elite performance. Rather than focusing internally on body movements, Wulf recommends that athletes direct their attention externally—such as aiming for the ball’s trajectory or the finish line. This approach helps athletes perform more naturally and with greater efficiency, tapping into the body’s instinctive abilities. This shift in focus can make a substantial difference, potentially turning fractions of a second or minor adjustments into medal-winning advantages for these high-performance athletes.
